Context

Our customer, Seven Telematics, is a UK-based manufacturer of Transcan® temperature data loggers, one of the world's most popular monitoring device in the logistics industry. Founded in 1991, the company has been at the forefront of logistics innovation since, and their decision to top up their product range with a comprehensive fleet monitoring system was to further solidify their market position.

Iflexion was honored to become the technology partner of their choice, joining Seven Telematics on the project. The paramount goal was to create a multi-functional web-based logistics software, with additional services in mobile app development to make the service fully accessible across platforms and devices.

Challenge

Recognized for its market-leading cargo temperature tracking technology, Seven Telematics tasked our logistics app development team with building fleet management software that would provide the following capabilities:

  • End-to-end fleet tracking via a built-in geolocation module
  • Real-time and historic analysis and visualization of driver, vehicle and depot data
  • Alerts and notifications to drivers and fleet managers on a range of parameters
  • Exceptional usability across the web, iOS and Android versions of the system

Solution

In just under eight months, Iflexion’s team delivered a web application and two native mobile applications for iOS and Android, as well as integrated them with the customer’s operational software.

Highlighted Features

Fleet tracking

The system provides GPS-based tracking of individual vehicles or groups of vehicles via both real-time and historic ‘snail trails’. Fleet managers can make use of live vehicle search, look up drivers’ road event history, and analyze traffic in real time based on integrated satellite data.

The built-in Asset List module allows multiple grouping and sorting options to facilitate management of large fleets. Users can also invoke context menus by hovering over asset icons or the map.

Two more handy features, Fleet Tables and Fleet Metrics, allow users to create point-in-time snapshots with the latest telemetry data for the fleet and to calculate data for each asset within a particular time range, respectively.

Geolocation data visualization

To visualize vehicle location and enable road condition display, the team integrated Google Maps along with Google Street View via an API, which provides up-to-date global mapping coverage for the purposes of geolocation tracking and vehicle monitoring. The system uses map overlay to show vehicle location icons.

Additionally, users can create, view and edit their own waypoints, or points of interest, by adding either a postcode or coordinates directly to the map.

Iflexion’s logistics app developers also added several functional enhancements to increase the usability of the service, such as pop-ups with current journey status and context menus for viewing asset data.

Data analytics and reporting

One of the strongest value-adding components of the entire solution is its analytical and reporting suite. Processing both live and historic data, it helps managers create in-depth reports on a range of metrics, covering driver, vehicle and depot performance. The featured KPIs include:

  • Journey and vehicle metrics (duration, mileage, location, road events, etc.)
  • Fuel consumption
  • Driver timesheets
  • Driving behavior (harsh braking, over-revving, etc.)

It’s possible to create reports for individual drivers and vehicles or the depot performance overall, as well as run a comparative KPI analysis.

The Report Writer module used for generating reports contains a variety of customizable templates. Reports can be sorted by column, added to the user’s folder, exported to Excel and PDF, or printed out.

User area and authentication

The users can access all the system features right from the customer area on the Seven Telematics portal. The solution aggregates and visualizes the data collected by the back-office software from satellites, navigation devices, and sensors.

This solution is integrated with the Seven Telematics CRM for user identification and account management, so that customers monitor only the vehicles associated with their accounts.

Each customer of Seven Telematics is given a super-user login that allows creating and configuring additional user accounts.  The admins gain access to such features as user account creation and management, multiple fleet selection, and setting of user preferences.

Mobile telemetry applications for iOS and Android

Tasked with the logistics mobile app development, our team developed native iOS and Android apps to provide access to vehicle tracking data on the go. The applications are fully integrated and synchronized with the web application via an API. The mobile apps offer the functionality identical to the core web portal, including data visualizations as graphs, charts, and diagrams.

Results

The logistics app development project between Iflexion and Seven Telematics proved to be a success as the company reinforced its market positioning as a progressive telemetry technology provider with their new fleet tracking and management system called SevenEye®.

Accessible on web, iOS and Android platforms, the solution fulfils several critical objectives. With its advanced vehicle and temperature tracking features, it ensures real-time vehicle condition check and timely cargo delivery while improving driver safety in general. It also helps fleet managers raise the efficiency of their depots by providing visibility into fleet performance and mitigating potential risks of road emergency.
